Hi, I’m PADDIE — your everyday safety buddy.
Let me ask you something real quick:
If a fire broke out in front of you right now, would you know exactly what to do — or would you freeze?
Most people freeze.
We’ve all seen fire extinguishers hanging on walls in malls, offices, homes, event venues… but the truth is, many of us have never actually used one. In fact, we often just assume someone else knows how to use it.
But what if you’re the only one there when the flames break out?
Here’s what you need to know — and remember — before you ever need to pull that pin.
1. KNOW WHERE IT IS — AND WHAT TYPE IT IS
Not all fire extinguishers are the same. Some are for electrical fires, some for oil fires, some for paper or fabric. Using the wrong one can actually make the fire worse. Check the label and make sure the extinguisher is appropriate for the space it’s in.
2. REMEMBER THE WORD ‘PASS’
This is the golden rule of using a fire extinguisher:
• P – Pull the pin.
• A – Aim the nozzle at the base of the fire.
• S – Squeeze the handle.
• S – Sweep from side to side.
Don’t just spray wildly — the goal is to smother the fire at its base, not just cover the flames.
3. DON’T TURN YOUR BACK ON THE FIRE
Even if the flames go down, stay alert. Fires can flare up again, especially if the source wasn’t fully put out. If the fire keeps growing, get out fast and call emergency services.
4. GET HANDS-ON TRAINING
Watching a video or reading this blog is great. But nothing beats trying it yourself. Look for safety training sessions near you and actually test out how a fire extinguisher feels in your hands.
5. MAKE SURE EXTINGUISHERS ARE VISIBLE AND ACCESSIBLE
What’s the point of having one if no one can reach it in time? Keep it out of hiding. Check expiry dates. Make sure it’s functional — and that people in your home or team know where it is and how to use it.
Fire doesn’t wait. It spreads fast. In a matter of seconds, small sparks become full-blown emergencies.
So don’t just admire that red canister on the wall. Know it. Understand it. Practice with it.
Because one day, it might save someone’s life — maybe even yours.
